20 Things to do When the Boss is Wrong

Leadership Freak

You have an obligation to yourself, your boss, and your organization to speak up when you disagree. One of the best ways to earn respect is advocating for your ideas with integrity, courtesy, and intelligence.

Strong organizations have courageous leaders.

Weakness gives in too soon.

Arrogance hangs on too long.

Foolishness speaks before thinking.

When the boss thinks you’re wrong but you think you’re right:

  1. Make the boss feel understood. Do you fully understand her position? Ask questions.
  2. Determine if it’s worth the fight.
  3. Don’t give in if you’re convinced. Organizations need leaders with strong beliefs.
  4. Advocate with courage and courtesy.
  5. Engage them in private.
  6. Explain your intentions and desired results. Describe the win.
  7. Explore how you can give the boss what they need while hanging on to what you need.
  8. Get the facts.
  9. Test assumptions.
  10. Search for options.
  11. Embrace the big picture.

Maddie’s Fund – Family Fun: Projects for Kids and Adults to Help Shelter Pets

This made me think how great it would be if we had someone who could and would go to local schools and give presentations, speeches, do projects or whatever about Spay and Neuter, Feral Cats, the plight of Homeless Pets and encourage kids to do special projects and birthday stuff at AO or their local shelter.  Any teachers out there with ideas on what we could do?

Help for Blabbermouths

Leadership Freak

Raise your hand if you have a boss who talks too much. Blabbermouth bosses exasperate everyone.

Raise your hand if you’re a boss. I bet you talk too much, too. As a general rule…

Leaders talk too much and listen too little.

Blabbermouth bosses talk too much because they:

  1. Don’t want others to talk.
  2. Believe they are “all that.” You can’t silence self-important prima donnas.
  3. Feel strongly. Passion drives verbosity.
  4. Love power and control. Research shows the powerful talk more than others.
  5. Know too much. Why listen when you already know? The gift of wisdom drops like pearls from their lips.
  6. Don’t care about others.
  7. Feel fear. Doctors know talkative patients are nervous, for example.

Bonus: Weak leaders talk too much when trying to convince skeptics.

Tips for Blabbermouths:

Forget about active listening. It’s beyond you. Just shut up.

Master silent listening before
attempting active listening.
