Cassy Marks Our Hearts are Broken

Updated 05/31/2015 1:00 p.m.  #cassymarks

Our hearts are broken over the loss of Cassy Marks.  Cassy left this earth suddenly in the early morning of Monday 05/18/2015.   For unexplained reasons, her car left highway 49 near her home south of El Dorado, CA and she was killed by the impact.  Cassy’s “adoptive” family (Ron and Melanie Neilsen, ) are raising money to help pay for her funeral expenses. Their son, Dakota Neilsen and Cassy were long-time partners and had plans to be married one day.

Cassy’s family has planned  her memorial service for June 14, 2015 at 12:00 noon at the El Dorado Town Hall.  We hope you all will join us in memorializing Cassy.  This is a large venue that will accommodate friends, family and co-workers.

No one expects to lose their 19-year old child, especially so suddenly and tragically.

We are doing very good with fundraising.  Although not enough to cover funeral expenses, there is enough to cover the planned memorial service.  A big Thank You to everyone for their generosity and prayers!

#CoachellaPardon

If you know me, then you know that I have to research new topics to death to before I can begin to write or otherwise work with the new information.  This post is a central location for the pieces of information I discovered about the NEXT SHANE’S WAR PARDON.  Shane and Janet have just announced that the next Shane’s War Pardon will be at the

Coachella Valley Animal Campus in Thousand Palms, CA.

Coachella contracts with the Riverside County Department of Animal Services for shelter services.  Riverside seems like it is proactively trying to educate the public to reduce unwanted dogs and cats and reduce owner-surrendered pets to the shelter.  How very refreshing!

Here are some information points:

  • The website address for the city of Coachella, CA is:  http://www.coachella.org/.  The city contracts with Riverside County Department of Animal Services for its animal services.
  • Riverside County Department of Animal Services have a mobile spay & neuter bus, nicknamed The ANSWER on Wheels.   Let’s make sure that bus is totally booked up for the week as part of the pardon.
  • Riverside County Department of Animal Services actively works with Animal Samaritans SPCA Inc.  According to their website:  Animal Samaritans SPCA is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit animal welfare organization committed to eliminating the euthanasia of adoptable animals. Programs and services in place to save the lives of healthy and treatable animals include prevention through humane education; low-cost spay and neuter; low-cost vaccinations; microchipping; shelter and care; and adoptions to lifelong homes. They also offer free services that enhance the bond between people and animals, such as a volunteer-based animal assisted therapy program for hospitals, health care, special needs facilities, and Juvenile Hall.  Animal Samaritans SPCA, founded in 1978, is the Coachella Valley’s lead animal welfare organization.
  • The new Animal Samaritans low-cost veterinary clinic is now located at the Coachella Valley Animal Campus. Animal Samaritans’ adoption center is still at its Ramon Road location at 72307 Ramon Road, Thousand Palms, California.
  • Riverside lists 4 shelters on their website but the Coachella Valley City/County Animal Shelter seems to be the main facility.  This facility provides complete animal services for the unincorporated areas of Riverside County. It also provides shelter and adoption services for Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert and Rancho Mirage.  Riverside County Animal Services provides field services for county areas and the above cities, except La Quinta, Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage. Those cities provide its own animal-control officers.
  • Coachella Valley City/County Animal Shelter operating hours as follows:
  • According to coachella.org, the city of Coachella is almost entirely Hispanic.  It would appear the demographics of the city council is fairly representative of the city residents.  In this area, it is critical that the spanish-speaking news outlets be included in the community outreach and event coverage.

CoachellaDemographics

  • The Riverside County Board of Supervisors includes District 4 Supervisor John J. Benoit.  The Fourth District is geographically the largest by far, covering the eastern two-thirds of the county. Within the Fourth District are the cities of Blythe, Cathedral City, Coachella, Desert Hot Springs, Indian Wells, Indio, La Quinta, Palm Desert, Palm Springs and Rancho Mirage.
  • Finally, let’s look at the outcomes for Riverside Animal Services.  I haven’t seen numbers this good from a shelter in a very long time.  Well Done Riverside!  Obviously the problem area are animals with issues that are treatable being killed.  Would love to hear what plans they have to get that number far, far lower.  Still, I think they are well on their way to a no-kill shelter.  Can you please go to San Bernardino and show them how to get this done!!!!RiversideCountyAnimalServicesOutcomeReport

San Bernardino Pardon

Things are starting to get rolling for the San Bernardino City Animal Shelter Pardon.  The event takes place February 4-8 2014 in and around the shelter located at 333 Chandler Place San Bernardino, CA 92408.  Hoping Shane and Company will get picked up by all the local media before the event, during the event and maybe even after the event.

I have tweeted the Ellen Degeneres Show and other TV shows that are based in Southern California.  It would be so great if they picked up on the story and had Alison Eastwood or Shane on their show to promote animal welfare, spay, neuter, rescue and the needs of the local community as it relates to their animal shelter and handling the horrible volume of dogs going through this place.  We must educate the public and get them to stop allowing unwanted pregnancies and hordes of unwanted dogs and puppies crowding the shelters in Southern California and beyond.  It is just criminal that this situation is allowed to continue with so little attention paid to the problems.

CBS Atlanta did come out to interview Shane today in Georgia.  Way to support your local do-gooders CBS Atlanta.  Hoping to see the story online soon, maybe a video clip if we’re lucky.

I will be in San Bernardino February 4th.  Hope to see you all there.  For the latest information about this Pardon, visit this page often:  http://pawsforhopeandfaith.org/blog/san-bernardino-pardon/

#WhyArentHashtagsWorkingOnFacebook

I REALLY like the idea of using Hashtags on Facebook. It would be great to search on #adoptablerescuedogs and find every single dog in every shelter and every rescue organization in one place. How about a hashtag for your favorite team….see what EVERYBODY is saying about your favorite sports team. It’s great.

somemarketingcompany

The ability to hashtag content was made available by Facebook in June of this year. The thought process was to conform to what most people would say is the most powerful tool on twitter (when used right). This would help Facebook distance itself even further as the biggest social platform in the world. Something, however, just isn’t going the way Facebook intended with the integrated hashtag system. Recent studies have concluded that hashtags in Facebook posts not only make your content less likely to go viral, but it will also decrease the engagement on your content.

Why hasn’t Facebook cracked the code on hashtags? What makes it such a powerful tool on one social platform and such a useless tool on another? I believe a lot of the problem could be due to the idea that people have already engraved in their mind about hashtags and where they…

Riverside County orders sterilization of pit bulls

Since the order exempts breeders and service dogs, I like the idea of requiring sterilization of all family pets, not just Pit Bulls. Since Pit/Pit mixes and Chihuahua’s are the most abundant dogs in shelters, I think the STATE should prohibit importation of these and other dog breeds from out-of-state-breeders and substantially limit the licenses for in-state breeders. Let’s not only target bad owners of Pit Bulls, but bad owners and breeders of all all dogs.
